California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

After a quarter-century span, every region of California is experiencing drought conditions. This milestone arrives after grueling years marked by below-average rain that worsened blaze threats and strained its massive agricultural sector.

A Chart Indicates No Dryness

The latest assessment from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that California in its entirety is clear of drought or abnormal dryness. This development came after a period of heavy precipitation that replenished major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their typical levels.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays

The path to this point involved powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, resulting in extensive inundation, blackouts, and tragic losses. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Until late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered experiencing dryness. Substantial precipitation at the beginning of January eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

However, experts warn that being out of drought is not the same as complete water security. Current readings of the high-elevation snow show it at only about 70% of the average for this date.

This frozen reservoir, which accounts for about a third of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for long-term water security. State experts stress that it is premature to determine the outlook for the coming year.

“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”

Although the monitor is entirely green, the next challenge is to sustaining this precious water balance during the months to come.
