EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
