The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions of the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing to construct it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and growing, and presently research projected his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We went from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the leader seek to颠覆 the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this has happened more slowly, across decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly definitely not the narrative of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, a baby is born to displaced parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The baby grows up in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his teaching concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and housing. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if a person pilfers your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing too.
The obvious and straightforward truth that Christ from scripture calls for a form of profound affection centered on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Best of Us
Hence I have become encouraged to see the steadfast resistance against Trump develop during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.
We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or reject?
America is best defended, to put it differently, through connection to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it distinctive and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it imply feigning the most negative about the nation and religious tradition was nonexistent; it represents both modesty and conviction, a combination that serious US believers should embrace.
