This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but within Together resides a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
